This weekend my daughter turned 9. So hard to believe. She is one of the sweetest, most tenderhearted girls I have ever known.
We took her and 4 of her friends to a special city for kids called Minopolis. This is one of my favorite places to take the kids. A cool place where the kids learn about life. It is a miniature city complete with stores, public services, a bank, tv station, and even its own paper.
Kids learn that if you want to be able to pay for your food you need a job. They have to go and look for a job. To get many jobs you need to meet certain requirements like having a drivers license. To have a one you need to go to class and take tests, and have a medical statement to fulfill the application requirements. It is a really neat place to take kids and teach them really valuable lessons.
My daughter and her 4 friends had a great time. We enjoyed watching them work together. They worked at the beauty parlor, grocery store, as press, police and construction workers. And each time we saw them they were busy earning money. They all did really well. Making several hundred in the time we were there. The first and last stop they each made was to the bank to add their earning to their banking accounts for the next time. Each child has their own bank card to go with their account so they can pick up where they left off. I think it is a really great concept.
To set the party theme I wrote all of their names in graffiti one their invitations. We carried that theme through until the end. I made gift bags out of a blue fabric, and put their name in graffiti on it again. These were for the party favors.
She loves the color blue so we made a special cake. I call it the peacock cake. I have been testing cakes for weeks as I mentioned before. I was inspired by the zebra cakes I have seen on Pinterest.
Make your batter of choice, then divide and color. After you color the batter add into pan in the pattern you desire until the entire pan is full.
This is what mine looked like. The kids helped me do this and we had a great time. Can you see why I call it peacock cake?
This is how it looked after I baked it.
I made homemade buttercream frosting. I had never done that before. I was winging it, and it turned out awesome.
Buttercream Frosting
1/2 cup butter {softened}
1/2 tsp almond flavoring
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4-1/2 c. condensed milk
use a blender to mix well to your desired spreadable consistency. Add food coloring if you want and enjoy!
