Helping Our Kids Pray aboutThings Matter to them

You are good to everyone,
    and you take care
    of all your creation.
Psalm 145:9

What do we do when our kids are sad about the fuzzy baby bird we saw helpless and in the grass during our walk. How do we comfort the child that is sad for a friend who lost their mom to sudden death, or just learned that their parents are getting a divorce. There are things our children will encounter that we can not fix, and they don't understand. We can teach then to talk to the one who can help.

Last week we were praying scripture. This is a great verse to memorize to use when we want to teach our children to pray for someone or something God made.

Here are examples based on the 2 situations above.

Dear God, we know that you are good. We know that you are good to each of us and you care for all that you made. I am thinking about the little bird we saw today. I am asking you to take care of it. I know that you will because that is what you do. Thank you for loving and caring for all you have made. Amen.

Dear God, I am thinking of my friend (_______). I know that you care for him/her because you care about everything you have made. Today (________) is sad because ___________ and ______________. Please help him/her to know you are there and that you care. Amen.

I think teaching our children to turn to the Father in all situations is one of the special things we get to do as parents.

  1. Excellent. Very good stuff. Sometimes "praying scripture" sounds so forced and awkward to me (not always!) but this is a fabulous example of a very natural-sounding one. Have a good day! (night?)
