How to Pray Scripture

When I was young a mom, I started an unlikely friendship with another mom. I had a 2 year old she had a Jr in College. We were asked to teach a class on prayer together. She was very involved with an organization called Moms in Touch. She lead groups of women praying for their kids for years. She started from the time her daughter was in elementary school. She was still leading groups of women when we met.

They prayed using scripture. I was fascinated by the special relationship she had with her daughter and longed for the same. she shared with me that her prayer habit had nurtured the relationship they have. She taught me how to pray scripture for my daughter.

She was always discovering new scriptures to pray. I always enjoyed my times talking to her about prayer. I greatly benefited from watching what a great impact it had in her life, as well as the life of her daughter. Her husband died of cancer and their relationship and strong mutual prayer life played an important role in their coping and healing.

Shortly after we became friends, I moved to Vienna. I missed the opportunity to pray scripture with another mom. I taught another mom here to pray like this. We met weekly to pray together for our kids. It was a great way fro me to learn German. I translated our prayer sheets each week. It helped me learn scripture in German as well as discover his beautiful nature in a new language.

I am now trying to find someone I can do that with again. Meanwhile I am bringing together the journaling, and scripture prayers. They both start with praise and have a confession and request element. So it works out pretty well.

If you would like to learn it is really easy. You pick something about God that you want to concentrate on. You select verses that describe that attribute and as you pray you start out by telling him what you know about him.  Then you pick a verse to focus on and personalize it to pray for your children.

Here is an example:

GOD IS WISE and HE PROTECTS US

Proverbs 2:6-8 – For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a
shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and
protects the way of His faithful ones.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I praise you for giving wisdom and that from your mouth comes knowledge and understanding. You hold victory for the upright, and you are a shield to those whose walk is blameless, you guard the course of the just and protect the way of the faithful ones.

Then you place your child(ren)'s name(s) into the scripture you have to reinforce something you would like to see come to fruition in their life/lives.

Kid scriptureProverbs 3:21-26 – I pray that child's name will preserve sound judgment

and discernment, that he/she will not let them out of her sight, that they will be life
for him/her, an ornament to grace his/her neck. Then she will go on his/her way
in safety, and his/her foot will not stumble; when child's name  lies down he/she will not
be afraid; when he/she lies down, his/her sleep will be sweet. child's name  will have no
fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will
be child's name s confidence and will keep his/her foot from being snared.

I really enjoy praying scripture. I hope that you give it a try and if you are interested in learning more about Moms in Prayer (formerly Moms in Touch) follow the link below.
