This week we have been talking about praying with our kids. I am always looking for new ways to do that with my kids.
Today I went on a prayer walk with my kids. What a blessing it was for all of us. We went out walking with the purpose of praying about things that we encountered.
When I decided to do this with my kids, I had no idea how special it really would be.
My son first saw the men who clean up the streets. He spoke to each one of them and then after we passed them. We stopped and looked back at them. I prayed for them. We continued to walk.
We prayed for creation, we prayed for groups we prayed for people. The longer we walked the more involved he became.
My sons favorite color is red and we found red leaves..thank you God for the red trees. Later we ran across more leaves, brillant and colourful The vines bright color caught his eye. This was my favorite moment....Mom look at this YELLOW! He made yellow. Do you know what this is? It is a NEW sunflower. Then he went ahead screaming thank you God for making the new sunflowers.
We were in conversation with God the whole time. It blessed me, it changed me and we will be doing this more often. He talked about it, the people we saw and prayed for. We were more aware of what we have. We were full of thanksgiving and wonder. This was the best way I have modeled prayer to my sweet boy. I highly recommend it.
I watched the little old lady struggle to get down from the sidewalk to cross the street to get back to her yard. I thought about all the things that were making the simple task of walking across the street so hard. Almost immediately I thought to myself. I am so tired, but it is truly a blessing to be capable to do simple boring everyday things like pick my daughter up from school. Push the stroller, walk. I prayed for the lady to have strength, less pain and rest.
Wish I would have done this sooner. It was so great. It helped all of us focus and be more mindful of how blessed we are.
Have any of you ever been on a prayer walk?
I would love to hear some stories.

I have done several things like this with my kids in the past, but have let the weeds of life push somethings like this out. You have inspired me to re-ignite the practices I have let slack. How sweet and precious it was to read the magical moment you shared with your children when you took the time to teach them as you walked along the roads.
ReplyDeleteWhen I only had a few children (I know have 5), I use to wake up really early and pluck a kid out of bed, and we would drive to a perfect location and watch the sunrise. We'd sit wrapped in blankets with cups of hot 'coffee', and read Psalms aloud together in between prayers. The kids learned to love waking early! Sometimes, as a family, my husband would take us to a local park that has a high muslim population, and we 'pretend' we are on a mission overseas. We do much as you wrote above, praying over every person we see and encounter, while filling in the rest with praise and worship. They feel like they are are Mary Slessor in Africa and become passionate in their assignment to pray. I get a visual piece of what the Lord meant when we were to become 'like these' to enter heaven.
Thank you for writing this. You have encouraged me today to do goods works.
Thank you so much for your sweet words. Blessed my day. Thank you for reading and I really loved your idea of taking a kid to with the sun rise. What a special thing. I really loved all that you shared. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
