Liebster Award 2014

I was nominated for the Liebster award by my friend Adelina. She blogs at Pack Me Too. I always learn something from her posts. Be sure to check out her blog. I am sure you will learn something new as well as add a few things to your travel list.

So here is how this works. Adelina tagged me and left a list of questions for me to answer so everyone can get to know me better. You can see her nomination and learn more about her here.

What is the story behind your blog – why did you start it and why that name?

I had a small blog earlier for my family and friends. People were always asking about what we were doing, where we were going and why. So I decided to get more serious about blogging. I had made things from scratch and talking about my recipes and things on Facebook. I started to get inquiries asking for me to share the recipes and other tips. I decided to use my blog as a way to share all things relating to our life.

Lately I have started to share more about our travels and where we live as I realized that people really don’t know much about that part of our life.  Now if you come to the blog you are likely to see places we have been, what we are eating and the new creative things I am into at the time.

You can find the story about how I named my blog here.

What kind of things excite you the most while traveling?

I can sum this up in one word. ADVENTURE. When I am completely honest. I am most happy in life when I am discovering, trying/tasting, and doing something for the first time. It excites me. I try to eat new foods, learn new skills and discover people’s stories when I travel.
How do you decide where to go?

At the stage that we are in our family life. Work determines the majority of our travels. we travel to network and build relationships with others in connection to our work. We also pick one special non work related trip each summer. We often travel with my parents on these trips. It is a great way to create memories and strengthen the bond between the kids and my parents who live in America.
Where is the strangest place that you’ve slept?

The first time I went to Rome I was 22, and traveling with 8 friends through Europe. We slept with like 20 other people in the hallway next to the bathrooms on an overbooked train. It was fun! There were guys playing the guitar and we were all sharing travel stories. Honestly we may have slept 2 hours total.
Which country do you think has the best food?

Wow! This is a difficult question. I love so many foods from so many places. I will have to go with Poland on this one because of all the emotional attachments that go along with my eating experiences there. My in-laws live there, and my mother in law is an amazing cook. When I get homesick for things it is often something she makes. When they come to visit she leaves the freezer and fridge stocked with gifts of food love. I have a special bond with Polish food for that reason. Also some of my favorite travel food moments were in Poland.
Who is the most interesting person that you met on your travels?

I met an old Croatian woman on my way home from Bosnia to Vienna in 2008. She lived in the states, was born and raised in Croatia but had raised her children in Vienna. We talked almost the whole ride, she took me under her wing. I was traveling opening day of the Euro cup. Austria and Croatia were playing one another. If you know anything about European Soccer fans I am sure you can imagine what this ride was like. She protected me, kept the guys in our area in order by getting on to them like all good European Grandmas do. By the time we arrived I had a couple recipes from her and the guys in front of us even carried our luggage off for us! Here is one of the recipes she gave me that is a family favorite of ours now!
When you’re not traveling, what do you spend most of your free time doing?

Exploring, eating and taking pictures.
If I were to go to your hometown (or where ever you are now), what would we see and do? And most importantly, what would we eat?

If you were to come to Vienna I would take you to my favorite park and to eat at a heurigen in Perchtoldsdorf. If you were coming and it was your first time to Vienna we would hit the normal sites like the Rathaus, Schönbrunn, Stephansdom and we would grab some food as we were out and about! There are many tasty things here.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to travel around the world, or live in a foreign destination?

Be open minded. Be willing to try new things, learn new things and experience WHO you can be when you step out of your normal routine. It is exciting to discover yourself over and over. Take advantage of that opportunity!
Share a photo or a post that you’re most proud of.

Here is a recent post that has some of my favorite pictures from the past few months.  Here is one of the photos.

Here are my nominations:

  1. What a great photo! And that day you have planned sounds great. I can’t wait to come for a visit 🙂 The Croatian woman you picked up on the train sounds amazing. What a cool memory and yummy food to come from it.
